What does “Match Grade” mean?

You might read match-grade written on many primer packs, but the answer to what it means isn’t that simple. Match grade doesn’t indicate that primers are made to need any certain standard, so, for the most part, it can mean whatever the manufacturer of the primers wants it to mean.

Sometimes, it is just label manufacturers add to their products for marketing purposes, and sometimes there is a legitimate difference, and match-grade primers are made using better material to get more accuracy for competitive shooters.

CCI:

CCI is a very popular brand when it comes to primers, and they mostly make CCI Small Rifle Bench Rest Primers #BR2 and CCI Small Rifle Bench Rest Primers #BR4 as a part of their Accuracy grade primers. The BR stands for benchrest, as in bench rest rifles, which are usually shot for accuracy.

The premium primers by CCI are a little more expensive than standard primers. Now, CCI themselves don’t make any claims about the definable benefits of using their BR primers, but they are made with better components, and people do claim that they improve accuracy.

Winchester:

Winchester is one of the oldest manufacturers of firearms and ammunition in the US, and they only recently started selling Match grade primers. However, they haven’t been easily available, because of the recent ammo shortage. Still, the standard Primers from Winchester, whether they may be small rifle or pistol varieties, are really great.

Federal Ammunition:

Next up, we have Federal Ammunition, which is also one of the biggest ammo manufacturers in the US. They make some high-quality bullets, and when it comes to primers, they have two premium product lines, apart from high-quality standard primers.

These are the champion line and the Gold Medal Match line. Moreover, in the small rifles category, you get two subclasses, which are standard GMM primers, and GMM primers specifically designed for AR-pattern rifles named the Federal Premium Gold Medal AR Match Grade Small Rifle Primers #GM205MAR, that have free-floating firing pins.

Now, like CCI, Federal doesn’t make any specific promises regarding the performance of these Gold Medal Match grade primers, however, there are many accounts on the internet of people claiming that these primers make a lot of difference.

Remington:

Remington is also a popular firearms manufacturing company in the US, and before bankruptcy, they used to make two kinds of bench rest primers, designed for small rifles. The Remington Small Rifle Bench Rest Primers #7-1/2 are meant for use in high-pressure cartridges, whereas the Remington Small Rifle Primers #6-1/2 are for low-pressure rounds like .22 Hornet.
